True Refuge: Finding Peace and Freedom in Your Own Awakened Heart, By Tara Brach

This is the second book of Tara’s I have read, and I highly recommend it.  How do you cope when facing life-threatening illness, family conflict, faltering relationships, old trauma, obsessive thinking, overwhelming emotion, or inevitable loss? If you’re like most people, chances are you react with fear and confusion, falling back on timeworn strategies: anger, self-judgment, and addictive behaviors. Though these old, conditioned attempts to control our life may offer fleeting relief, ultimately they leave us feeling isolated and mired in pain.

Radical Acceptance: Tara Brach’s first book – brilliant!

Loving Kindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness, By Sharon Salzberg

Throughout our lives we long to love ourselves more deeply and find a greater sense of connection with others. Our fear of intimacy—both with others and with ourselves—creates feelings of pain and longing. But these feelings can also awaken in us the desire for freedom and the willingness to take up the spiritual path.

A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose, by Eckhart Tolle

This book should be mandatory reading from an early age.  It describes how our attachment to the ego creates the dysfunction that leads to anger, jealousy, and unhappiness, and shows the reader  ow to awaken to a new state of consciousness and follow the path to a truly fulfilling existence.  Highly Recommended

Siddhartha: by Herman Hesse

This is one of the first books I read about finding peace in this simplest of moments.  It inspired me to continue studying Eastern philosophy and psychology.  In the novel, Siddhartha, a young man, leaves his family for a contemplative life, then, restless, discards it for one of the flesh. He conceives a son, but bored and sickened by lust and greed, moves on again. Near despair, Siddhartha comes to a river where he hears a unique sound. This sound signals the true beginning of his life — the beginning of suffering, rejection, peace, and, finally, wisdom.
